The Billboard Music Awards 2013 … Who Won, Who Missed & the Star-Studded Performances
On Sunday May 19, the Billboard Music Awards 2013 were handed out to the best performers of the music industry. Musicians from different backgrounds, young and old attended the glittering ceremony to commend and be commended for the music they create. Staying true to the tradition, the Billboard Music Awards 2013 had its share of highlights and mishaps. Here’s a quick recap of the happenings at the BBMA.
1. Justin Bieber- Booed by the crowds
While Justin Bieber was the only star to perform two songs at the do and took home two awards – The Top Male Artist and Top Social Artist- he did not get a warm response from the crowd. The Canadian singer took off from a glass bubble with the song “Take Off”. He wore a one sleeved leather bomber jacket featuring a logo Bieber Air. His second was a joint performance with will.i.am, That Power.
Bieber took the stage with a bevy of female dancers and when the crowd booed at him he hit back with, “I’m 19 years old. I think I’m doing a pretty good job,” Bieber said. “It should really be about the music — should be about the craft that I’m making. This is not a gimmick. I’m an artist, and I should be taken seriously, and all this other bull should not be spoken of.”
2. Selena Gomez– The Golden Belle
Selena Gomez stole the show with her sizzling belly dance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday. Draped in a golden glittering ensemble embellished with metal accents, the 20 year old singer danced to the tunes of her latest single “Come and Get it”. For the second time Selena Gomez sported colorful “Bindis” on her forehead. It’s a tribute to the Indian theme in her song. She shared that Britney’s “Slave 4 U” inspired her performance.
3. Taylor Swift– Beauty in Blue
Her performance may have not been very impressive (if compared to BF Selena Gomez), but she sure wowed the crowds in her blue shimmer dress. Taylor Swift and a troupe of dancers kept the crowds engaged with her song “22”. The singer dressed in a blue t-shirt and pair of black shorts showed off her pins.
Taylor Swift was the top grosser at the BBMA taking home eight awards – Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Country Album, Top Country Song, Top Digital Songs Artist (tie with Carly Rae Jepsen)
4. Madonna- A Icon Forever
Madonna did not perform. However, she walked up to collect the award as the Top Touring Artist for her MDNA tour 2012. Cloaked in black, she received her award from will.i.am.
5. Miguel- You better watch where you leap
Miguel was a little too excited for the whole event. He couldn’t control his excitement and neither his movements. He was performing live and doing flips when all of a sudden he landed on two spectators, women in the front row. Luckily, no one was injured.
6. Chris Brown– A little too athletic
What took everyone by surprise at the BBMA 2013 was Chris Brown’s live performance. Chris brown wore a crisp black suit to the event and showed off slick moves during his performance of Fine China. The highlights of his performance were the glaring red lights and of course his fancy mic.
7. Bruno Mars- Kept it simple
The Hawaiian born singer Bruno Mars commenced the program with his song Treasure. And while the performance was incredible, his attire leant a retro-chic look to the event.
8. PitBull and Christina Aguilera- The rocking duo
PitBull and Christina Aguilera had the crowds dancing and swaying to Feel This Moment. The mother-of-one Christina showed off her slim figure in little black dress. She sure has dropped those pregnancy pounds.
9. Jennifer Lopez– Too feathery
We do not know whether to say scantily clad or overdressed? Jennifer Lopez donned a bright red outfit with sleeves that looked like a lot of extra fabric had been attached to it. Her performance was a page from what happens in Vegas.
10. Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus was at the event not to perform, but to present awards and promote her single “We can’t Stop” which will be released in June 3.
