4. An ointment to speed up healing

One can use an antiseptic ointment to speed up the healing process. It can be an over-the counter ointment or a brand recommended by the tattoo artist. Ensure that the ointments are not petroleum based and does not contain zinc. Zinc irritates the skin while petroleum based products block pores and delay healing.

5. A soothing moisturizer for the skin

In the initial days you can use the ointment. However, after it shows signs of healing, you can discontinue the use of the ointments and start using a skin lotion or moisturizer to soothe the skin. Wash and dry the area and apply a thin layer of the moisturizer or lotions. Choose variants free of perfumes, dyes and alcohol.

6. What should you expect during the healing period

The sight of a red, irritated and oozing wound is enough to give anyone the jitters. However, there are certain unpleasant conditions you may experience till the tattoo has completely healed. The tattoos will pain and hurt for the first few days. The skin around becomes tight and sore. The tattoo generally oozes the first few days after you get inked. This is the moisture trapped in the wound. It should be a clear liquid. If the wound oozes pus and blood, you should visit a doctor. The skin will flake much like a sunburn during the later stages of the healing process. It is accompanied by severe itching. Don’t not scratch or itch. Also, do not peep off the skin.

7. Decreasing your chances of contracting infection

You should try as much to avoid exposing a freshly inked tattoo to water. Shower is fine, but avoid sea baths and swimming for a while. The water may contaminate the wound and increase you chances of an infection. Also avoid picking at the scabs. Avoid exposing the tattoo to sunlight for long.
